Fun and Creative Ideas for Capturing Memories Beyond Traditional Photography
Fun and Creative Ideas for Capturing Memories Beyond Traditional Photography
(AKA Ideas Beyond Professional Photography)
Your wedding day is one of the most significant events of your life, and capturing the memories goes far beyond posed portraits and classic group shots. As a professional photographer it may seem obvious that I’m going to say that Wedding Photography will always be a cornerstone of documenting your special day, there are however countless fun and creative ways to supplement preserving the joy and emotion of the day. Here are some ideas to get you thinking.
1. Create a Wedding Video Guestbook
Swap the traditional guestbook for a video version! You can either set up a camera and DIY or (to avoid faff and potential stress) hire a videographer to record messages from your guests. You could even provide prompts like “Share your favorite memory with us” or “Give us your best marriage advice” the great thing about this is as the evening goes on and the drink flows, the answers you’re given are guaranteed to raise a smile.
2. Use a Polaroid or Instant Camera Station
This is already a popular choice and I’m absolutely here for it!
Polaroid cameras bring a touch of nostalgia and fun to any wedding. Set up a table with instant cameras, film, and props, and invite guests to snap candid photos. Combine this with your guestbook by asking guests to stick them in a scrapbook or display them on a photo wall with a heartfelt message.
3. Incorporate a Photo Booth
Hate them or love them, photo booths truly allow your guests to share their funny moments and let their hair down long after your proffesainal photographer has packed up and gone home. With playful backdrops, themed props, and high-quality prints, they add an element of fun to your wedding party. Many vendors offer digital options also, allowing guests to share their photos instantly on social media and a nice keep sake online gallery you can access anytime.
4. Capture the Day with Disposable Cameras
This one does come at a slightly higher cost than other options but it can absolutely be worth it. Place disposable cameras on each table and let your guests become photographers for the night. Expect that not every shot will be perfect, but the candid, unpolished photos often capture moments that professional photographers might miss. After all we can’t be everywhere all the time.
5. Hire a Live Painter
Yes this is a thing and it’s quite new, but it’s a great keepsake and momentum for your day that could well take pride of place above your fireplace. A live wedding painter can turn a significant moment, such as your first dance or the ceremony, into a stunning piece of art.
6. Provide a Memory Jar or Card Box
Something a little different now, that doesn’t involve photographs/video at all. Encourage guests to jot down their favorite memories, well wishes, or funny stories and drop them into a memory jar or card box. You can read them on your first anniversary or whenever you want to relive the day.
7. Create a Time Capsule
Have your family and friends add items or notes to a wedding time capsule. Seal it, you could even plant it in your garden (probably not at the wedding venue though) and open it on a future milestone, perhaps your 10th anniversary? This will not only be a nice surprise and something to look forward to but it will help to reminisce about your wedding day through the eyes of your loved ones.
Also if things go badly… just keep it buried.
8. Experiment with 360-Degree Photography
This is probably not a cheap option and requires a little knowledge in post processing but having a 360-degree camera can aid to capture immersive images and videos, allowing you to relive your wedding in a dynamic way. If the budget allows consider having a few recording throughout the day in different spaces/places.
9. Capture Audio Memories
You can hire “Phone guest books” and all sorts these days, but you can even go more budget friendlier than that. Simply buy yourself a dictaphone (yes… they still exist). Then ask your guests to record audio messages to add a personal touch to your wedding memories. Combine heartfelt messages with snippets of the speeches, vows, and music to create an auditory keepsake.
These things don’t have to be perfect, so don’t over think it.
10. Hire a Caricature Artist
Caricature artists bring an element of entertainment and creativity to your wedding. Guests get to take home a personalized piece of art, and you’ll have a collection of fun drawings to remember your big day. They’re fun, light hearted and especially great for those who don’t take themselves to seriously.
11. Create a Social Media Hashtag
It’s here to stay… as much as sometimes I wish it wasn’t. Encourage guests to share their photos and videos on social media using a custom hashtag. This allows you to see your wedding through their eyes and creates an online album of candid moments. Word of warning though, I’d stick to your ceremony being unplugged. You don’t want to look back on your professional photos and just be looking at a sea of phones instead of faces.
You could also let your photographer know the hashtag so they can be sure to add it if they post any.
As always, thanks for reading, I appreciate you.
